Fiesta de Sumpango (the Kite Fistival), Sumpango, Guatemala

The weekend before my dearture from Antigua Guatemala, the weekend was the biggest festival time of the region, dia de los muertos, on the following day of Halloween. the two Cities close to Antigua, Sumpango and Santiago, are known for their kite festivals with barrilettes gigantes.

Some of the barrilettes are about 5 meters tall, others shaped in noncircular shapes. It is amazing not only to see these barriletes gigantes lined up in front of us and but also to watch them fly (or try to fly) in the sky later on the day. Although we were able to see some of 3 meter ones fly and others crash, we were not able to see the largest ones’ challenges to fly.
